All good things must come to an end, as the old adage goes, and yes, that includes tooth restorations like durable, lifelike dentures. If you’ve been wearing your prosthetic teeth for a while, you may be wondering when you’ll need to replace them. Here are four telltale signs that your dentures are ready to retire, and what you should do if you notice them!
Chips, Cracks & Wear
Although in some cases, damaged dentures can be repaired, if yours have chips, cracks or other signs of wear such as damaged teeth, it may be time for a new pair. If you do spot any of these problems on your prosthetics, don’t wait too long to see your dentist, as they can get worse with time, and even allow harmful bacteria to become trapped inside your restorations, causing odors and increasing your risk of oral infection.
Stains, Odors, & Discoloration
It is important that you remove your dentures to clean them after each meal, and to soak them in water or denture soak overnight so they don’t dry out. These steps are designed to protect your gums from infection, but also to keep your restorations looking (and smelling) their best. If yours have become discolored, stained, or have developed a foul odor, this is a good indicator that it’s time to upgrade to a new pair.
Pain, Pressure & Discomfort
Your dentures should fit comfortably when eating and speaking and should never cause painful sores or soft-tissue irritation. If they do, it can be extremely difficult to use them properly and can even increase your risk of developing oral sores and gum disease. If your trusty teeth have begun hurting when you wear them, it’s time to talk to your dentist about either a reline or a new prosthesis.
Slipping, Sliding & Lack of Suction
Your dentures stay in place on your arches via natural suction. If they have begun to slip and slide when you eat or speak, or if they’re unable to grip your gums even when not being actively used, it’s time to talk to your dentist about retiring them.
Remember, your dentures should look and feel like a normal, natural set of healthy teeth. If this is ever not the case, it’s important to discuss your options with your dentist. While it may be possible to repair minor damage, if they are between five and seven years old and showing multiple signs of wear and tear, it’s probably time to upgrade your grin!
