Sedation Dentistry

If you have severe dental anxiety, sedation dentistry is an excellent way to help you relax during your appointment. Patients will take a sedative before their procedure to feel calm enough to get it done. No more having to endure your unbearable toothache because of your fear of the dentist!

At Smile Design Implant Centers, we offer three forms of sedation for our patients.

IV Sedation

Intravenous sedation, or IV for short, is the administration of the sedative drug through the bloodstream. During the appointment, we will place a small needle connected to an intravenous tube into a vein on your hand. It will deliver the medication directly into your bloodstream for fast-acting results.

IV sedation is beneficial for the following reasons:

  • Ideal for those with sensitive gag reflexes
  • Eliminates the ability to feel pain
  • Less discomfort after the procedure

Oral Sedation

Oral sedation is one of the most common forms of sedation dentistry due to its convenience. Patients will take the sedative in the form of a pill hours before the dental procedure. Most oral sedatives are benzodiazepines, which decrease the brain activity that controls fear and anxiety.

Oral sedation is beneficial for the following reasons:

  • Better for those with mild to moderate anxiety
  • No needles
  • Great for those with certain medical conditions (cardiovascular disease, diabetes, etc.)

Nitrous Oxide Sedation

Nitrous oxide is also known as laughing gas. Patients can get this form of sedation by breathing in nitrous oxide through a mask. The dentist controls how much sedation you’ll receive, and the gas wears off quickly.

Nitrous oxide is beneficial for the following reasons:

  • Patients can drive themselves home after the procedure
  • Fast-acting
  • Little recovery time
